Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of alcoholism include:

  • A strong, overwhelming desire to drink alcohol
  • Difficulty controlling use of alcohol
  • Drinking alone
  • Persistent, continuing use of alcohol despite awareness of harmful effects
  • Increased tolerance for alcohol
  • Withdrawal symptoms when alcohol is not used
  • Loss of interest in other activities
  • Finding excuses to drink
  • Breaking commitments and letting people down due to alcohol

Alcoholism is also sometimes referred to as problem drinking, excessive drinking, alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency.
